Making 3D printing commercially viable; Making mobility safer and more efficient

    Hello,

The excitement is always palpable at this time of the year.

Apple’s WWDC 2025 event kicks off today as the company is expected to debut a host of new and interesting features for its iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and more.

At last year’s event, Apple unveiled its Apple Intelligence AI platform. This year, experts believe the company will also show off an AI battery manager and AI-powered live translation feature for its AirPods.

Even some animals are now adept at using tech. Ukrainian soldiers recently found a bird’s nest constructed using fibre optic cable from armed drones.

Animals have long been a source of inspiration, especially when it comes to medical breakthroughs.

The popular diabetes management and weight loss drug Ozempic was created after scientists discovered how the venom of the Gila monster—a reptile native to North America—created a digestion-slowing hormone that enabled the animal to survive on just a few meals a year.

    Nature is full of surprises.

And now, weight loss drug sales are reaching new highs, as pharma companies tap into the huge demand for anti-obesity solutions in the country. Obesity management drug Mounjaro’s sales in India shot up 60% from April to May this year.

In today’s newsletter, we will talk about

    • Changing 3D modelling and printing game
    • Making mobility safer and more efficient

Here’s your trivia for today: Which is the only African country where same-sex marriage is legal?

Changing 3D modelling and printing game

From a small 3D operation making models and prototypes, Fraxus 3D has now grown to create industrial models and miniatures for a number of businesses and organisations, including the Indian Railways.

The company operates a full-fledged manufacturing unit in Jaipur, employing 18 full-time staff and supported by about 10 freelancers.

    Prototypes and more:

    • The company can process up to 25 kilograms of 3D printed material per day, compared to the industry norm of 2-4 kg. To achieve this, it uses over 40 machines and has also added certain modifiers to its machinery.
    • Fraxus3D also works on unique projects for the government and infrastructure sectors. It creates small-scale models of highways and public projects to help with planning and presentations.
    • Fraxus3D operates its gifting vertical under the brand name Fraxart, offering a range of gifts and jewellery. The gifting range starts at Rs 300 and goes up to Rs 5,000.

Making mobility safer and more efficient

Pune-based startup RUT3 Engineering aims to reinvent the wheel to redefine movement for millions.

The patented product, called the Damsus wheel, replaces the spokes inside the rim with an integrated suspension system and addresses critical issues.

    Reinvent the wheel:

    • The startup manufactures aluminium and mild steel wheelchairs. These are not just lighter and more rust-resistant than conventional models but also adhere to ISO 7176 testing standards for wheelchairs, including drop and durability tests.
    • The bootstrapped startup has won Rs 60 lakh from the Atal New India Challenge, Rs 25 lakh from the Prosus Assistive Tech Award, and additional support from Bajaj CSR and Venture Centre.
    • “We’ve already spoken to Hero Cycles, E-Motorad, and Alpha Vector. The idea is to roll out 30,000 bicycles with our suspension wheels by 2027,” says Co-founder Mitesh Rasal. “Eventually, we want to enter two-wheeler safety tech too.”

    News & updates

    • Big haul: Meta Platforms is in advanced discussions to invest potentially more than $10 billion into artificial intelligence startup Scale AI, reports Bloomberg News, citing people familiar with the talks. If completed, the deal would rank among the largest private funding rounds in history.
    • AI in college: According to NYT, OpenAI is in the midst of a major push to make ChatGPT a fixture on college campuses, replacing many aspects of the college experience with AI alternatives. • Gaming record: Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record by selling over 3 million units within 24 hours, tripling PlayStation 4’s previous launch day sales. With strong global demand and ample stock, it is poised to break two-month sales records faster than any console in history.

What you should watch out for

    • India in space: NASA, in partnership with ISRO, will launch Axiom Mission 4 on June 10. The mission marks the fourth private astronaut flight by Axiom Space and the first to carry an ISRO astronaut to the International Space Station.
