Broadway Musical ‘Smash’ Closing After Tonys Loss

Smash will play its final Broadway performance on June 22.

The musical, which is based on an NBC television series, is cutting its open-ended run at the Imperial Theatre short after opening April 10. Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron and Steven Spielberg are producers on the musical, which features direction by Susan Stroman and a score by Hairspray’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The meta show follows a group of Broadway producers, writers and actors trying to put on a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe, but running into several obstacles, with some of the songs adapted from the television series and some written specifically for the production.

This is the first show to post a closing notice after the Tony Awards took place June 8. Smash was nominated for two Tony Awards, for best featured actor for Brooks Ashmanskas and for best choreography, but did not take home any awards. The show also missed out on the key Tony nomination of best musical.

However, the show has struggled at the box office and has seen an audience drop off in recent weeks, bringing in 66 and 68 percent capacity in the past two weeks. The musical hit its highest gross of $1 million in the week ended April 20, following its opening, but that is likely not enough to offset the running costs of a musical this size.

Smash features a book by Rick Elice and Bob Martin, with choreography by Joshua Bergasse.

In addition to Ashmanskas, the cast features Robyn Hurder, Krysta Rodriguez, John Behlmann, Kristine Nielsen, Caroline Bowman, Jacqueline B. Arnold, Bella Coppola, Casey Garvin, Nicholas Matos and Megan Kane.
