IRCTC’s New Tatkal Rules: Aadhaar & OTP Must from July

Every morning at 10 AM (for AC classes) and 11 AM (for non-AC coaches), millions of Indians try their luck on IRCTC’s Tatkal service—often competing against bots and ticket agents. But starting July 1, 2025, that race is getting fairer. A suite of reforms by Indian Railways and IRCTC promises to ensure genuine passengers have a better chance at securing last-minute tickets.

    What’s Changing and Why

    1. Aadhaar authentication becomes mandatory

From July 1, 2025, passengers booking Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website or app must be Aadhaar-verified. During login, IRCTC will cross-check Aadhaar details via UIDAI before allowing Tatkal bookings.

This step aims to tackle fraudulent accounts and ensure that real travellers—not bots or scalpers—are in the queue.

    2. OTP verification goes live

On July 15, the system adds another layer of security: every Tatkal booking—online, at PRS counters, or via authorised agents—will require a one-time password (OTP) sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

This ensures the person booking the ticket is the Aadhaar-holder, preventing misuse.

    3. Agent booking restricted during peak window

To deter bulk bookings, ticketing agents will be blocked from Tatkal bookings during the highest-demand periods:

    • AC classes: 10 AM–10:30 AM
    • Non‑AC classes: 11 AM–11:30 AM
    • Agents can participate only after this window closes giving real individuals a headstart.

Tech Overhaul to Level the Field

IRCTC’s backend overhaul has paid off. On May 22, the revamped system handled a record 31,814 bookings in 60 seconds, demonstrating its scale and stability.

    Moreover:

    • 2.5 crore suspicious IDs were deactivated.
    • Effective anti-bot measures were introduced to block automated scripts.
    • Infrastructure enhancements—including a robust CDN and AI-based ID screening—support faster access for real users.

How Real Users Stand to Benefit

    • Less competition from bots: With fake IDs deactivated and bots blocked, the Tatkal window is more accessible to individual passengers.
    • More fair initial access: Aadhaar and OTP checks ensure legitimate users get priority during the opening minutes, even discouraging agents from scooping up tickets.
    • System is robust & fast: Recent infrastructure upgrades have reduced crashes and lag—crucial when every millisecond counts.
    • Generous ticket cap: Individuals can book up to 4 PNR seats, while seniors lose no concession (Tatkal fares exclude discounts).

What You Must Do Before July 1

    1. Link your Aadhaar with IRCTC: Go to “My Profile” → “Manage OTP & KYC” and add your Aadhaar number.
    2. Ensure your mobile is updated: It must match the one linked with your Aadhaar (for receiving OTPs).
    3. Complete OTP authentication at counters or through agents post-July 15.
    4. Avoid agents during early window—they’re blocked anyway.
    5. Stay calm, stay quick: Save passenger details, login early, and use desktop + app to boost speed—these tips still matter.

    A Win for Genuine Travellers

Tatkal was launched in 1997 to provide swift, emergency reservations to travellers.

But over the years, misuse by bots and agents denied that purpose, turning critical tickets into premium commodities. The new measures are reversing that trend.

As the Railway Ministry put it:

“These changes are designed to bring greater transparency and fairness into the Tatkal booking system.”

    For genuine users, this means:

    • Greater Participation: Early access without battling illegitimate actors.
    • Enhanced Security: Aadhaar + OTP ensures tickets go to the right person.
    • Better Experience: Faster, crash-resistant booking interface.
    • Equitable Distribution: Agents barred from the crucial window; common users get a fairer shot.

    What’s Next?

While technology upgrades are already in place, the Aadhaar mandate will begin on July 1, 2025, and OTP verification at all touchpoints goes live July 15, 2025. Travellers should act now—link Aadhaar, verify their accounts, and prepare to reclaim their rightful access to Tatkal tickets.

Indian Railways’ Tatkal reforms mark a major shift—transforming a system once dominated by bots into one that rewards genuine passengers. With Aadhaar, OTP checks, and technical upgrades, the morning scramble is getting smarter, safer, and more just. If you travel on short notice, this is your moment: prepare, be ready, and let the system do its work for you.
