Amazon India is looking to invest Rs 2000 crore ($233 million) to scale the domestic retailer’s operations and network.

Amazon India will use fresh investment to expand and upgrade its operations infrastructure, develop technology for its fulfillment network and support associate safety and well-being programs.

This comes just a week after Amazon marked its foray into quick commerce after launching pilots for Amazon Now services in Bengaluru. Amazon is among the last major ecommerce companies to enter the quick commerce space, having previously adopted a cautious stance over concerns around profitability and logistical complexity.

While Amazon has a large warehousing and fulfillment network across the country, the company now has to compete with players for dark store networks that drive quick commerce operations.

A part of the latest capital infusion will be used to launch new sites and upgrade existing facilities across its fulfilment, sortation and delivery network. The investment will focus on improving processing capacity, fulfillment speed, and increasing efficiency to serve customers across India faster and more reliably.

This comes at a time with major incumbents like Blinkit, Instamart, and Zepto have alredy crossed 1000 dark store marks. Flipkart Minutes, Flipkart’s quick commerce play, is also on track to set up 800 dark stores by the end of the year.

“For over a decade now in India, we have been focused on building the best-in-class logistics infrastructure—designed to deliver with safety, speed, scale, and reliability for our customers across the country. These latest investments reflect our commitment to continually expand and upgrade our operations across our fulfilment, sortation and delivery network,” shared Abhinav Singh, VP – Operations, Amazon India and Australia in a press note.

Amazon also said it will continue to invest in initiatives focused on the health and financial well-being of its operations workforce. This includes expanding rest-point facilities under the ‘Ashray’ program, financial literacy and support through ‘Samridhi’, scholarships via ‘Pratidhi’, and healthcare services for truck drivers under ‘Sushruta’.
