The dinosaurs are back three years after the Jurassic World trilogy wrapped — and more than 30 years after director Steven Spielberg‘s first movie, Jurassic Park, stomped into theaters. But just how big will the appetite be for the seventh title?
Jurassic World Rebirth, from Universal and Spielberg’s Amblin Productions, opens Wednesday, July 2, in North America on the eve of the long Fourth of July weekend. Tracking is suggesting a five-day debut in the $100 million to $125 million range, but that that number could climb higher. At the same time, there’s plenty of competition for eyeballs, including from Brad Pitt and Apple Original Films/Warner Bros.’ F1: The Movie.
Rebirth also opens in more than 80 markets across the globe timed to its North American launch.
Directed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story filmmaker Gareth Edwards from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, the summer tentpole features an all-new ensemble cast anchored by Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. The story follows an extraction team who race to an island research facility that fed the original Jurassic Park (along the way, they discover an shipwrecked family). Now, the island is inhabited by the worst of the worst creatures that were left behind.
Rebirth also features Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulf, Luna Blaise, David Iacono and Audrina Miranda. Producers include longtime franchise stewards Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, with Spielberg and Denis Stewart exec producing.
The three Jurassic World pics all grossed north of $1 billion globally, and all opened higher than Rebirth is forecasted to do. It also cost less to produce, or $225 million before marketing.
The global publicity campaign for Jurassic World Rebirth has included Johansson hosting the finale of Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season on May 15. And in June, Rebirth stormed IGN Live with an exclusive clip that received 7.9 million views on TikTok.
