This startup is bridging the gap in EV servicing with AI-powered battery diagnostics

In a workshop near Ahmedabad, Shubham Mishra once saw a mechanic check a lithium-ion battery using only his hands. The lack of proper diagnostic tools exposed a serious gap in EV servicing, one that led Mishra to co-found E-Vega Mobility Labs.

Founded in 2019, Ahmedabad-based E-Vega Mobility Labs is the parent of BatteryOk Technology, which has developed EV Doctor- a compact, AI-powered device that diagnoses EV battery health in just 15 minutes.

The startup is helmed by Mishra, who serves as CEO, and Ajay Vashisht, the CTO. Mishra previously worked with Gensol, Sickle Innovations, and AI firm AIM Technologies, while Vashisht brought in experience from his time as a software engineer at DRDO.

The idea of building something in the battery space came after the co-founders realised how expensive e-bikes were, despite relatively modest bills of materials. A book on Elon Musk and a deeper dive into battery chemistry and manufacturing inspired Mishra to start E-Vega Mobility Labs. The company’s initial focus was on building affordable e-bikes and retrofitting cycles, but it pivoted to battery diagnostics amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We realised we were good with the tech side,” Mishra tells YourStory. “And we found a real gap in how battery testing was done.”

    The product

EV Doctor was born out of that pivot. The small and portable device, weighing just 300 grams, is now used by over 1,500 B2B clients, including Zypp, Gauss, MG Motor, and Jitendra EV. More than 2,000 units have been sold across India and to international markets, including Mexico, the US, Vietnam, South Korea, and China.

The product solves a problem that has long plagued the EV ecosystem: the lack of a fast, standardised battery diagnostic tool. Most workshops still rely on low-cost multimeters, manual checks, or time-intensive CDC machines that can take over eight hours. “The learning curve was high, the results were limited, and accuracy was low,” Misra says.

EV Doctor streamlines battery testing into a 15-minute process, the startup says. Users connect the device to the battery and the system, and it collects voltage, current, and time data, which is sent via Bluetooth to the cloud. The AI engine, hosted remotely, runs computations and sends back results through an application.

EV Doctor uses over 24 proprietary AI models based on machine learning algorithms like Extended Kalman, XGBoost, and Random Forest. The company has trained its foundational models on more than two lakh real-world battery datasets. These algorithms classify batteries, estimate DC internal resistance (DCR), and identify more than 10 different types of faults, from water damage to performance degradation.

    Business model

The company operates on a B2B model, supplying EV Doctor to workshops and dealerships that use the tool to offer faster, more transparent battery diagnostics. “Earlier, customers would have to leave their batteries for days,” Mishra says. “Now, the test is done in 15 minutes, and the report is shared immediately, building trust.”

This speed not only improves customer satisfaction but also benefits workshop owners, who can charge per diagnostic session and address issues flagged in the report, according to the entrepreneur. Many dealerships have reported a 10X increase in the number of batteries they can test daily, creating a steady new revenue stream, he claims.

BatteryOk Technology also works with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) globally. Clients like REMSA and RenewGo use EV Doctor for tasks ranging from battery second-life assessment to fleet management and warranty tracking. Mexico-based REMSA previously tested three batteries a day manually. “With EV Doctor, they now test over 20,” Mishra says.

The startup remains bootstrapped with 50 lakh and has generated over Rs 4.5 crore in revenue to date. It is currently in discussions with institutional investors for a funding round at a targeted valuation of Rs 20 crore. The team comprises 22 people, with 14 focused on core tech.

The company operates from a single office in Ahmedabad. Looking ahead, it plans to expand its product capabilities. The team is also working on integrating battery intelligence into EV financing models, where leasing and rental options will depend on battery health data.

While companies like CATL and BYD, with massive data reserves and R&D teams, are potential competitors, BatteryOk Technology believes its focus on battery diagnostics and its own AI models gives it an advantage.

However, Mishra admits that building credibility has been an uphill task. “People often don’t believe that deeptech can be built in India,” he says. “They ask if we copied it or got it from somewhere else. But we built everything ourselves, from the ground up.”

The startup is also working on a new venture called Energy AI Labs, which aims to build a unified intelligence layer for the global energy ecosystem, called Energy Super Intelligence (ESI). However, this venture registered name is Xener Energy, incorporated in December 2024.

According to Mishra, the team has already built a prototype and is currently testing it with major energy companies and validating it with key players in the energy tech space. The company plans to launch the product by mid-September this year.

“Around $5 trillion is lost every year because of energy inefficiency,” Mishra says. “We believe smart analytics can help recover nearly 40% of that.”
