Key Takeaways
- Dhruva Space emerged from a student satellite project and a vision to privatise India’s space sector.
- It offers end-to-end satellite solutions, simplifying access to orbit for global clients.
- The company has achieved record launches, secured significant funding, and is building one of India’s largest satellite manufacturing facilities.
In 2011, a student-built satellite launched aboard ISRO’s PSLV-C18, marking a first for India. That moment lit the spark for Dhruva Space, a private company with ambitions far beyond Earth. Founded in 2012 by Sanjay Nekkanti, the startup was born from a question that refused to fade: “Why hasn’t a private Indian company launched anything into space yet?”
<div class="externalHtml embed" contenteditable="false" data-val="” align=”center”>
From Student Satellite to Space Vision
Nekkanti’s formative experience with SRMSat, India’s first student satellite launched in collaboration with ISRO, led him to pursue the prestigious Erasmus Mundus SpaceMaster program in Sweden and France. The global exposure reinforced his belief that India could become a hub for satellite development.
Back home, he co-founded Dhruva Space with a mission embedded in its very name: “Dhruva” – the Pole Star – a guiding force in India’s shift toward a privatised space economy.
“The landscape is changing rapidly,” Nekkanti notes. “Progressive policies, easier capital access, and a robust ecosystem are empowering private players.”
Solving the Orbital Puzzle with Full-Stack Engineering
What sets Dhruva apart is its integrated approach. In a fragmented industry where satellite companies, launch providers, and ground segment firms operate in silos, Dhruva offers a streamlined, all-in-one service.’
“Customers no longer want to deal with a fragmented process for launching assets into orbit,” says the CFO and Co-founder Chaitanya Dora. “We provide the satellite platform, launch services, and ground infrastructure — a full-stack solution.”

This model not only cuts costs and accelerates deployment but also caters to a growing demand for satellite constellations, not just standalone launches.
A Record of Rapid Launches and National Recognition
In just 24 months, Dhruva Space has launched eight space assets, a record in India’s private sector. Collaborations with bodies like IN-SPACe have helped transform blueprints into liftoff-ready missions.
The company’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Dhruva Space won the National Startup Award in 2020 and the PDU Telecom Skill Excellence Award in 2023. Most recently, it raised Rs 123 Crores (US$14.7 million) in Series A funding, with major contributions from SIDBI and the Technology Development Board.
Who Dhruva Serves
Unlike companies that build rockets or payloads, Dhruva specializes in the satellite platform, subsystems, deployers, and Earth stations. Its flexible customer model appeals to payload providers eager to own and operate space assets.

“We serve both civilian and defence sectors across India and beyond — including Australia, the UAE, France, and Austria,” says Nekkanti.
Dhruva Space has also partnered with other Indian Space companies such as Pixxel, Satsure, Manastu Space, and Skyroot Aerospace to enrich customer experiences and to fortify the vision of Make-in-india.
Building for Scale: A New Manufacturing Frontier
To meet growing demand, Dhruva is constructing a 280,000 square-foot manufacturing facility near Hyderabad’s airport. Strategically located within the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Hardware Park, the site will include a dedicated solar panel division and be near key defense customers like DRDO.

“We’re in talks with global OEMs looking to leverage this facility to scale their capabilities,” says CTO and Co-founder Abhay Egoor.
The Talent Pipeline for a New Era
As the industry evolves, so does the talent it requires. COO and Co-founder Krishna Teja Penamakuru highlights the increasing demand for specialists across satellite design, analytics, and communications.
“Our expansion includes hiring for a wide range of technical and operational roles,” he notes. “From human space exploration to in-space manufacturing, the future demands multidisciplinary expertise.”
A Team on a Mission
Today, Dhruva Space employs over 200 professionals spanning engineering, sales, legal, finance, and regulatory affairs. Led by its four co-founders, the team remains grounded in its founding ethos: to guide India’s journey to becoming a global space power.
