Ride-hailing platform Uber has pulled the plug on its shuttle bus offerings in Mumbai and Hyderabad, the company confirmed to YourStory.

Mint was the first to report on this matter.

According to the report, low ridership and rising operational costs prompted the US-based company to halt its offering in these cities. Uber will continue to offer these services in Delhi and Kolkata.

Uber Shuttle offered pre-booked, fixed-route bus services for commuters, similar to public transportation in these cities.

The shutdown is expected to affect between 250 and 300 buses in Mumbai and about 150-200 buses in Hyderabad, where the shuttle service was introduced early this year, the report said.

According to the Mint report, the company has doubled down on its shuttle services in Delhi-NCR and as of December 2024, was operating on about 300 routes in Delhi.

This shutdown comes days after the company announced a slew of new features being introduced on the platform as competition intensifies in India’s ride-hailing segment.

Some of these features include price lock, which will help riders lock in fares for their most frequent routes by paying a small upfront fee, instead of paying dynamic fares during peak hours or heavy traffic as well as Uber for Seniors—a simplified app interface with larger buttons, fewer booking steps, and real-time trip tracking for families designed for senior adults.
