Stride Dynamics: Pioneering India's Autonomous Drone Revolution

In the corridors of IIT Kanpur, two engineering minds—Pence Mataria and Gajendra Nagar—discovered a shared fascination with flight. Initially building RC aircraft, their ambitions quickly evolved toward autonomous aerial systems. Their journey, rooted in student projects and international competitions, culminated in the creation of Stride Dynamics, a robotics startup determined to reimagine India’s capabilities in intelligent aerial robotics.

    Igniting Innovation from Rajkot

Founded in August 2023 in Rajkot, Gujarat, a city famed for its entrepreneurial ethos, Stride Dynamics is more than a drone company. The co-founders aim to establish a pioneering robotics enterprise, focusing not only on performance but also on a critical void in the Indian tech ecosystem: autonomy. Their vision is clear: develop globally competitive aerial robots from India, for India, and eventually for the world.

“We realised that India was almost a decade behind global systems in terms of autonomy,” says Mataria. “We saw an opportunity to fuse aerial and mobile robotics to build systems with real-world impact.”

    Addressing a Deep-Tech Deficit

While India’s drone sector boasts over 250 startups, most focus on performance metrics such as range and altitude. Few tackle the complex challenge of autonomy—building drones that navigate and operate independently, especially in GPS-denied environments. Stride Dynamics is stepping into this gap.

Their miniature autonomous drones promise functionality in environments where traditional drones falter: industrial sites, hazardous zones, and indoor facilities. Whether it’s a police unit conducting surveillance or a warehouse needing inventory checks, these drones are designed to augment human capabilities with precision and reliability.

    Market-Driven, Mission-Focused

Stride Dynamics targets a wide spectrum: Homeland Security, Defence, Infrastructure, and Warehousing. Their go-to-market strategy begins with defence and police applications, where their hand-launchable, GPS-independent drones can gather real-time intelligence in challenging terrains. In parallel, they explore enterprise applications like automated inventory audits, offering immediate business value and faster sales cycles.

“Our strength lies in building from scratch—hardware, software, and algorithms—tailored to India’s needs,” says Nagar. “This allows us to be agile, affordable, and deeply integrated.”

Building with Grit, Scaling with Vision

Stride Dynamics has engineered a compact prototype that operates seamlessly both indoors and outdoors, streams high-quality video up to 5km, and sustains over 20 minutes of flight. What sets it apart is the use of vision-based navigation—an economical alternative to expensive LiDAR systems, without compromising on capability. Early demonstrations with state police and enterprise clients have drawn promising responses.

Yet, hardware innovation in India remains fraught with challenges: unreliable manufacturing timelines, high costs, and a fragile supply chain. Undeterred, the team continues to push forward, buoyed by government grants from the Department of Science and Technology, Startup India, and support from accelerators like Mach33.

Their message to future founders? “Just do it. Iterate fast, build what you believe in, and master communication—within your team, with your customers, and with yourself.”

    Charting the Future

In the next three months, Stride Dynamics aims to move from prototype to pilot deployment. Plans include expanding the team and developing lighter, more advanced systems. Long-term, they envision fully autonomous drones capable of remote operations and integration with docking stations, revolutionising surveillance, inspection, and emergency response.

Their ultimate mission: making India a global hub for deep-tech robotics.
