Though the industry still has a long way to go, these Emmy contenders are returning filming to Los Angeles one lot and location at a time.

Abbott Elementary, Nobody Wants This, The Pitt and The Studio

A pandemic, two strikes and massive wildfires have all wreaked havoc on Hollywood. Though recent data shows shooting in Los Angeles decreased by more than 22 percent from January to March compared with the same three-month period in 2024, these series, many of which have already been renewed for another season, are slowly putting a dent in that figure, choosing to film in L.A. rather than turn to such alternative locations as Atlanta and Vancouver.

‘Abbott Elementary’

Quinta Brunson’s ABC workplace comedy is steeped in Philly culture, but the show is primarily filmed at Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank, with exterior shots of the school being captured at L.A.’s Vermont Elementary. -
‘Challenge Accepted’

YouTube daredevil Michelle Khare films her digital series in which she takes on some of the world’s toughest professions, like mastering Houdini’s deadliest magic tricks and training as a black belt for 90 days, in L.A. -
‘Good American Family’

‘Good Mythical Morning’

‘Government Cheese’

Hacks

Though the drama of the Max comedy initially centered on the Vegas residency of Jean Smart’s Deborah Vance, the cast didn’t film scenes in Las Vegas until season three, as the show is primarily shot on a stage at CBS Television City. -
‘Matlock’

The pilot for CBS’ Kathy Bates legal drama reboot was shot in Toronto, but the remaining 18 episodes of the series’ premiere season were taped at Paramount Studios. -
‘Mid-Century Modern’

Hulu’s comedy about three gay besties who decide to move in together is set in Palm Springs, yet most filming takes place on a Burbank soundstage — save for the exterior shots of the former Dinah Shore Estate in Palm Springs as their home. -
‘Nobody Wants This’

Erin Foster’s Netflix rom-com was filmed at L.A.-area locales fans can visit in real life, like Pilates Eagle Rock; Mama Shelter and 3rd Base LA in Hollywood; Iguana Vintage Clothing in Sherman Oaks; and Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. -
‘Paradise’

The set of Dan Fogelman’s apocalyptic thriller is an underground bunker city in the mountainside of Colorado, but filming for the Hulu series takes place on the Paramount lot. -
‘The Pitt’

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’

‘St. Denis Medical’

The pilot for NBC’s mockumentary about the emergency room staff at an underfunded hospital in a fictional Oregon town was shot at the former St. Vincent Medical Center in DTLA, with the rest of the season being filmed on the Universal lot. -
