Historian David Olusoga Launches Hillgate Films With BBC Studios Deal

Historian and broadcaster David Olusoga, a University of Manchester Professor of Public History, has launched a production company called Hillgate Films.

The company said on Thursday that it would “focus on developing and producing innovative and thought-provoking history-focused documentaries, formats and series, both with, and without, Olusoga as on-screen talent.”

The company launch comes with support from BBC Studios in the form of a development deal that, according to the firm, “will reinforce growth ambitions in return for a first look [at] distribution rights.”

Hillgate Films will operate as a co-producer rather than a standalone producer “to allow Olusoga to focus on fewer, more ambitious projects,” the firm highlighted. “By working as a co-producer, Hillgate can collaborate with a range of established partners on larger-scale projects while leaving Olusoga the creative freedom to concentrate on the content itself, rather than the day-to-day management of a production company.”

Hillgate said it has its first two projects in production, but didn’t disclose further details. Olusoga’s work has included the BBC’s A House Through Time and recent landmark BBC series Union.

Said Olusoga: “We want to explore the untold stories from history, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with the forward-thinking and dynamic team at BBC Studios. I’m passionate about creating work that brings fresh perspectives to light, and I believe we have an incredible opportunity to do that with Hillgate Films.”

He added: ” With a development deal with BBC Studios in place, we’re ready to grow and scale the company and have ambitious plans for the future.”

Olusoga is joined at Hillgate by managing director Ben Hall, who previously served as global director of programs at Motion Content Group. “David’s track record as a storyteller and historian speaks for itself, and I’m delighted to be working with him to bring important and engaging stories to audiences,” he said on Thursday.

Kate Ward, managing director, unscripted productions at BBC Studios, said: “David has a proven track record of telling bold and nuanced stories from history that resonate globally and can drive conversations and change perspectives.  We are delighted to be continuing our long working relationship.”
