Tune up your piano, Schroeder: Apple TV+ has set its first original Peanuts musical.
Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical is the first new Peanuts musical special in 35 years. Ben Folds (of Ben Folds Five, and also the guy who composed “It’s the Small Things, Charlie Brown”) will write original music for the July 18 release, as will Jeff Morrow. A Summer Musical has a 40-minute runtime.
This summer, Charlie Brown is determined to make his final year at camp special, but Sally — a noob camper — is nervous about the new and unfamiliar place. And also Snoopy and Woodstock discover a treasure map that takes them on “a wild adventure,” per Apple TV+.
Here’s some more from Apple: “One morning, the Peanuts gang learns that their beloved camp is shutting down because there are fewer campers joining each summer. The news especially saddens Charlie Brown, who feels hopeless about losing a place that has meant so much to him and his friends. Meanwhile, on their adventure, Snoopy and Woodstock find the sought-after treasure chest, but are quickly disappointed when they discover it’s not riches, but instruments and photos from past summer concerts held at the camp. Newly inspired, Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang use the treasure to host their own concert to save the camp.”
Produced for Apple TV+ by Peanuts and WildBrain, Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical is directed by Erik Wiese and is written by Craig Schulz, Bryan Schulz and Cornelius Uliano. Executive producers are the Schulzes, Uliano, Paige Braddock, Josh Scherba, Stephanie Betts and Logan McPherson.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Peanuts. Apple TV+ became the home of Peanuts in 2019 (the deal was first announced in 2018).
Apple TV+ has a mix of new and old Peanuts content. There’s Camp Snoopy, The Snoopy Show, Snoopy in Space, Lucy’s School, For Auld Lang Syne, To Mom (And Dad), With Love, It’s The Small Things, Charlie Brown, Who Are You, Charlie Brown?, One-of-a-Kind Marcie and Welcome Home, Franklin, as well as the classics, including A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
