In a proud moment for Assam’s startup and innovation ecosystem, Sivasagar-based Woolah Tea, operated by TTLT India Pvt Ltd, has received a 20-year patent for its revolutionary Bagless Tea Technology. The patented process, titled “Compressed True Whole Leaf Tea Dips and Method Thereof”, marks a significant leap in India’s efforts to blend tradition with sustainable innovation.

A Homegrown Innovation with Global Potential

The startup’s signature offering—whole leaf tea compressed into a bagless format—delivers the convenience of dip tea without the waste or additives of conventional tea bags. This eco-friendly innovation not only preserves the integrity of handpicked Assam tea but also aligns with global shifts toward plastic-free and sustainable consumption.

“Woolah Tea, a passionate homegrown startup, has successfully patented its unique Bagless Tea Technology,” said the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

From Assam to the World: Representing India at NY Fancy Food Festival

Adding another feather to its cap, Woolah is representing India at the 2025 Summer Fancy Food Festival in New York, showcasing its patented innovation on a global stage. The prestigious international event is known for spotlighting cutting-edge food technologies and niche gourmet products.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the team via social media, stating:

“Heartiest congratulations to the Woolah Tea team! Your success reflects Assam’s potential to lead in innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.”

    What Makes Bagless Tea Unique?

Unlike traditional tea bags, Woolah’s product uses no nylon, plastic, glue, or staples. Instead, it compresses whole tea leaves into a compact, soluble cube or pod that infuses just like a dip bag—without leaving a waste trail. This not only enhances the flavor profile but also preserves the rich heritage of Assam tea cultivation.

A Boost for Assam’s Startup and Agri-Tech Ecosystem

The patent validates the ingenuity of Woolah’s founders and highlights the growing momentum of tea-tech and food innovation startups emerging from India’s Northeast. With Assam already a globally recognized tea-producing region, Woolah’s advancement adds a new dimension—technological leadership and IP creation.

As Woolah Tea scales its production and expands globally, the patent is expected to open up licensing opportunities and further investments. The company’s journey from Sivasagar to global showcases serves as a case study in how local innovation can create world-class impact.
