The Beach Boys is mourning a major loss.
Brian Wilson, who co-created the group in 1961 alongside younger brothers Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, has died after battling a neurocognitive disorder, his family shared on social media June 11. He was 82.
“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,” Brian’s family wrote on his Instagram page. “We are at a loss for words right now.”
Brian was the father to seven children: Carnie, 57, and Wendy, 55, whom he shared with ex-wife Marilyn Wilson, and Dakota, Daria, Delanie, Dylan and Dash, whom he adopted with his late wife Melinda Ledbetter, who passed in 2024.
“Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving,” they continued before acknowledging their father’s loyal fanbase, saying, “We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world.”
Concluding their post, the family nodded to the title of Brian’s 1988 hit from his first solo album, adding, “Love & Mercy.”
