From College Lab to Industrial Frontline: Rosa Tech Is Building Intelligent Co-Workers for High-Risk Jobs

What began as a college side project between two students passionate about robotics at a modest lab in Jamshedpur has grown into Rosa Tech, a deeptech startup redefining industrial safety and automation with intelligent, human-collaborative robots.

Runner-up at the Dell Entrepreneur Challenge, Rosa Tech is designing intelligent machines to collaborate with humans, not replace them, and enabling a safer, more efficient future for sectors such as manufacturing and defense.

Rosa Tech’s journey accelerated when one of its early prototypes caught media attention and opened doors to present directly to the top management of Tata Steel. Though the project didn’t materialize due to internal restructuring, the experience validated their idea and laid the foundation for a company focused on solving real-world industrial problems.

The company’s founding vision? To build robotic platforms that not only execute tasks but also perceive, adapt, and work alongside humans in complex environments.

The founders, Rohit Anand and Saket Anand, found inspiration from grim realities observed during early industrial automation work. Workers were performing repetitive, low-productivity tasks in hazardous environments, especially in sectors like mining and oil, and gas.

“It became clear that existing robotic systems fell short in areas such as intelligent manipulation, autonomous navigation in complex indoor-outdoor spaces, and contextual understanding of human commands,” Anand says.

In response, the team developed Robot General Intelligence (RGI), a platform that brings cognitive flexibility to robotics. Rosa Tech’s systems are designed not as replacements for human labour but as capable teammates that adapt, learn, and respond intelligently to their surroundings.

Starting a robotics company in a small town like Jamshedpur came with its own set of obstacles, chief among them, talent acquisition. With a little local startup ecosystem to rely on, Rosa Tech pivoted. It recruited fresh engineering graduates straight out of college and invested heavily in training them. Over time, this homegrown team became the backbone of a fast-evolving operation, driven by shared purpose.

Then came the funding challenge. Robotics is capital-intensive, and sustaining early-stage development without external investment requires creativity. Drawing inspiration from Tesla’s early model, the team began selling individual components, such as power modules, sensor stacks, and control units, to generate revenue while continuing to develop its core technology.

Unlike traditional robots built for single-use cases, Rosa Tech’s RGI integrates machine learning, sensor fusion, control systems, and natural language processing into a single cognitive framework. The platform powers robots that can think, sense, and adapt like human workers.

Their flagship solutions include TAURUS, an unmanned ground vehicle built for rugged terrains, and an indigenous command and control center that manages navigation, power, and fleet operations. Designed for rapid deployment and minimal integration requirements, these platforms are ideal for high-risk industrial environments.

A turning point in Rosa Tech’s journey came after a failed field trial. Its first conveyor-cleaning robot underperformed during a live demonstration, prompting the client to pull out. Instead of retreating, the team used the setback as a diagnostic opportunity.

After three intensive design iterations, the startup deployed a refined version at another department in the same plant. The robot cleaned a 300-meter conveyor line autonomously in a single shift, outperforming manual teams and earning Rosa Tech its first paid contract.

That success highlighted the company’s commitment to iteration, resilience, and real-world impact.

Rosa Tech’s technology is not built for show; it’s built to solve mission-critical challenges. Its systems are already helping reduce risk in steel plants and defense facilities. And unlike traditional automation, its platforms are plug-and-play, requiring no costly changes to client infrastructure.

In one case, a senior operator at a steel plant remarked, “This is the first time we’ve seen a robot here actually make a difference.” For Rosa Tech, that moment confirmed that deeptech robotics can deliver a tangible, human-first impact.

Pitching at the Challenge gave the whole team more than just visibility. It pushed them to refine their narrative, articulate their “why,” and frame their work for a broader audience. Being named runner-up brought recognition, but also opened doors to investor conversations, new partnerships, and cross-sector interest.

“Standing on that stage with the best startups in the country was validation,” the founders said. “It reminded us we’re not just solving technical problems, we’re tackling national-scale challenges.”

With successful pilots and a growing team in place, Rosa Tech is now focused on refining its RGI platform for wider industrial deployment. Over the next three to five years, the team envisions becoming a global leader in cognitive robotics, powering intelligent machines that operate alongside people across sectors, from smart factories to battlefield support units.

Rosa Tech’s story proves that even the most technical innovations can be rooted in empathy. From a small college lab to national recognition, the startup is showing India, and the world, that intelligent machines can elevate the human workforce, not erase it.
