Hollywood is out participating in the “No Kings” protests.
People are protesting all across the country, including in major cities like Los Angeles and New York City, against President Donald Trump and his policies, just hours ahead of his military parade for the U.S. Army’s 250th Anniversary in Washington on Saturday, which is also Trump‘s birthday.
Mark Ruffalo spoke with MSNBC at a protest in New York City and was asked why people were out protesting in the rain “to send a message,” to which he responded, “Because we see our democracy is in real trouble.”
“We see a president who has made himself a king and dictator, and we don’t seen an opposition that’s powerful enough to stand up against the trampling of our rights and the trampling of the Constitution that’s happening every single day with executive orders, with the refusal to obey court orders, kidnapping of immigrants, people who are here legally, people who their children are being taken from them,” Ruffalo added. “We’re disgusted and we’re scared, and we know that the only way that — to fight this now is for the people, is to come together.”
Jimmy Kimmel, attended a protest in San Francisco with his parents. “A huge, inspiring and yes — peaceful — turnout in the South Bay. I met many people who love this country and still believe it to be a force for good. I am grateful to see so many Americans take action to stand up for our friends and neighbors, most of all, my parents,” he wrote on Instagram. “I know how fortunate I am to have been born into a family that taught me to care about others and that the most important words ever spoken are ‘Love one another.’ It really is as simple as that.”
Moby shared a video of himself on Instagram at a protest with the caption: “No kings. We need to do everything we can to protect democracy: protest, donate, post, run for office, vote, organize. Also now is absolutely not the time for any in-fighting.”
The Bear actress, Ayo Edebiri, shared a photo to her Instagram Story of a sign that read: “I love you & I have your back! Stay brave!”
“That’s So True” singer Gracie Abrams, too, took to her Instagram Stories, sharing two photos in crowds that read, “Free speech is not an insurrection” and “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor,” with the latter quote being from Desmond Tutu.
Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez-LoCicero shared a video at a protest to her Instagram Story, writing, “When in Woodstock, tiny town don’t stay quiet! #NoKingsDay The OG’s are out!”
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis captioned a carousel of video on Instagram: “Felt great to peacefully protest this administration in the streets today with fellow Los Angelenos. #LA always shows up.”
Glenn Close shared several videos to her Instagram as well as Another Simple Favor star Anna Kendrick. Creed actress Tessa Thompson and Evanescence singer Amy Lee also posted videos to their Instagram Stories at the protests.
Kathy Griffin posted a photo on Instagram of actress Morgan Fairchild protesting, writing “Yep, that’s our gal.”
The military parade begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.
