Men’s Style Expert Andrew Weitz Offers Fashion Tips for South of France

Andrew Weitz — a style consultant and men’s fashion expert who steers a firm called The Weitz Effect — recently fielded a call from a client with a packed European itinerary on the horizon. The country-hopping schedule would take him from yachts and parties to formal events and beach clubs, and the bold-faced name client needed the right threads to match the environments.

It’s a classic conundrum for gentlemen this time of year, particularly globe-trotters ones that have worked in some R&R after the 2025 Cannes Film Festival (St. Tropez or the Monaco Grand Prix, anyone?)

Below, Weitz offers his seasonal sartorial tips, shouts out some his favorite brands to buy right now and offers compliments to some movie stars.

When a client says they’re going to the South of France or the Mediterranean this time of year, what’s your general strategy?

It’s really about selecting the right style and fabrics to help you fit into the culture, which is very different. You don’t want to show up looking like an American in, say, Capri or St. Tropez while wearing board shorts, a t-shirt and flip-flops. Everything is elevated in those places and much more chic, classy and timeless. I’m helping a client right now who is going to be in Ibiza, Provence and St. Tropez and they wanted to know what they should wear for a series of events, including one on a yacht. There’s a very specific look, and it’s not for everybody. If you’re a musician or an athlete, you can get away with wearing an oversized Dior shirt and matching shorts but for some of my clients, that’s not going to work. I like everything to be more elegant and chic. So I talk to my clients about fabric choices so linen is always a top choice, or a linen blend. I love linen blends or a cotton as not every guy likes full linen.

Are there specific pieces you recommend?

I’ve been making custom pieces from my own label — Andrew Weitz Bespoke — and it’s all made-to-measure, and it’s great. I can knock something out in 24 hours if I need to, and it can be any fabric. It’s great for clients that are in a rush. I can do a wool, silk or linen blend casual blazer or chore jacket with a matching pant. The pant has more ease and volume to it; it’s not skinny or a slim cut. When you put that together with a crew neck underneath, it can be very chic. If we’re talking about brands, Zegna has a lot of super beautiful pieces that that we’ve been playing around with. They have a linen drawstring trouser with a beautiful johnny collar waffle textured polos. You can pair that with a triple stitch sneaker or espadrille or a loafer and it can be very elegant and understated without even trying.

I also like Isaia, which is a Napoli brand and is made for this style. They also have these luxury linen suits that you can dress up or dress down. I also go to Berluti for specific things as well as Loro Piana and Ralph Lauren, which has a lot of beautiful colored linens. Don’t forget Orlebar Brown, which is great for resort wear. You can wear it whether you’re on a boat and hanging out or at a beach club but you can also take it up a notch for when you’re going out for the evening. Orlebar Brown is great for both.

Speaking of taking it up a notch, is there a suggestion you have for a tuxedo that works for the Cannes Film Festival and the climate during the event?

Brunello Cuccinelli is obviously a brand that fits the aesthetic of the area, and they make beautiful tuxedos. When it comes for tuxedos, I look for something beautiful that’s is a wool silk, something lightweight, something that drapes and is the right color and tone for the season. This is when you can wear your creams, whites, beige, lavender and change it up. There’s so much you can do to mix it up. It’s all about the seasonal pastels and you can incorporate that into black-tie if it’s the right occasion.

Are there celebrities you think do it right in terms of men’s style?

Seth Rogen has style and you can really see it come through on The Studio when he’s wearing Brunello Cuccinelli, and it just shows how beautiful that brand is and how it can fit somebody in that role, or even when he’s on a red carpet. Ryan Reynolds always looks good, and so does Andrew Scott. He’s got great style. Chris Hemsworth knows how to do it. [See below.] Beyond that, when it comes to executives and business entrepreneurs, most people get help because either you have that style instinct or you don’t. And if you don’t you’re getting some help from a stylist. If you get help from the right people, you’re going to look great.
