Things are looking up for One of Them Days.
A sequel is in early development for the original comedy movie that Sony Pictures released earlier this year. Stars Keke Palmer and SZA are expected to return, as is the film’s creative team.
Lawrence Lamont helmed the TriStar Pictures feature from a script by Syreeta Singleton. It hit theaters in January and surpassed $50 million at the global box office.
Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage and Amin Joseph also starred in the first film.
One of Them Days centers on best friends and roommates Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), who learn that Alyssa’s boyfriend has squandered their rent money. The pals must scramble to avoid eviction in a race against the clock, while also striving to keep their friendship intact.
Producers included Issa Rae and Sara Diya Rastogi for Hoorae, Deniese Davis for ColorCreative, Charles D. King for Macro Film Studios, James Lopez and Poppy Hanks. One of Them Days was developed as part of Sony’s CoCre lab, which was a previous collaboration between the studio and ColorCreative to support ascending, diverse screenwriters in developing original feature ideas.
In her review of One of Them Days for THR, critic Lovia Gyarkye wrote that the film “is the kind of big-laughs, mid-budget theatrical comedy that used to be more common.”
Palmer previously hosted a 2022 episode of Saturday Night Live that featured SZA as musical guest.
SZA was new to acting and coming off the success of her Grammy-nominated album Saturn. Palmer is known for films including Nope and Hustlers, and she can soon be seen in the heist comedy The Pickup opposite Eddie Murphy, and the Aziz Ansari-directed Good Fortune that also stars Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves.
