Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with “The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana”, the West African nation’s second-highest state award, during his historic visit to Accra—the first by an Indian PM in over 30 years.

The decoration, presented by President John Dramani Mahama on July 3, 2025, recognizes Modi’s “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership”

What is the Order of the Star of Ghana?

Established in July 1960, this honour is awarded by the President of Ghana to individuals who significantly contribute to Ghana’s cause.

It ranks just below the Grand Order of the Star and Eagles of Ghana, introduced in June 2008.

Awarded in three classes—Companion, Officer, and Member—Modi received the Officer (OSG) grade, symbolized by a seven-pointed star and sash in red, yellow, and green—the colours of the Ghanaian flag.

Dedicating the Honour to 140 Crore Indians

In his acceptance speech, PM Modi expressed deep gratitude, sharing:

“I thank the people and Government of Ghana for conferring ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’ upon me. This honour is dedicated to the bright future of our youth, their aspirations, our rich cultural diversity and the historical ties between India and Ghana.”

He emphasized that this honour belongs collectively to “140 crore Indians” and particularly resonates with the younger generations in both countries.

    Strengthening India–Ghana Ties

The honour comes amid significant diplomatic breakthroughs:

    • India-Ghana relationship elevated to a Comprehensive Partnership, spanning trade, technology, defence, healthcare, and FinTech
    • India pledged to support Ghana’s ‘Feed Ghana’ programme, establish a Skill Development Centre, and double ITEC and ICCR scholarships
    • Launch of Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Ghana, cooperation on vaccine production, and introduction of UPI digital payments aimed at doubling bilateral trade in five years.
    • Modi committed to India’s continued partnership as “a trusted friend and development partner,” reinforcing shared democratic values.

    India’s Rising Global Reputation

This is the 24th global honour received by Modi, affirming his position as one of the most internationally decorated Indian leaders.

It symbolizes India’s escalating diplomatic profile and its proactive engagement with the African continent and the Global South.

PM Modi’s receipt of The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana marks a landmark moment in India‑Ghana relations. The award is a testament to India’s growing soft power, shared democratic ideals, and enduring bilateral friendship—with youth, development, and cooperation at its heart.

This accolade is not just symbolic—it reaffirms India’s role as a global development partner and underscores the deepening ties between two democracies working in tandem for future generations.
