Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorced Sistas’ Highlights ‘Powerful, Mature’ Women

Tyler Perry’s upcoming series Divorced Sistas follows five friends — Rasheda (LeToya Luckett), Geneva (Khadeen Indréa), Naomi (Porscha Coleman), Tiffany (Briana Price) and Bridgette (Jennifer Sears) — who are navigating the ebbs and flows of love and life while being established career women.

At the Friday night premiere of the series, Perry shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “These women are strong, powerful, more mature, been through the woes of relationships and the ups and downs of marriage, and they find themselves in peculiar situations.”

Peculiar — yet relatable — situations include their personal obstacles through relationships like divorce and tensions within their own sister circle, where “them sticking together is what gets them through it,” he said.

While viewers at home could potentially see themselves in each character, during the panel discussion the actresses shared the ways they specifically relate to the battles their characters are facing.

“I think younger Khadeen, maybe in her teens and twenties, can relate to Geneva in that she was very much worried about what everyone thinks about her,” Indréa shared. “Because of that, she is constantly living in a facade and she is showing up as a representative of herself to an extent.”

Coleman added, “Even though you see Naomi pop out and she’s going to keep it real … there’s so many moments too in so many scenes later where she finally has her breaking points. I think what that taught me just as an individual is, of course, be fearless, but also be OK to just show the real you.”

Vulnerability was a topic of the night, where each actress onstage described how the series gave their character the space to live out and address the fear of showing up authentically.

“I just think that for each of these characters’ defining characteristics, there’s an opposite side that is representative of their fear,” Price explained. “For my character, she’s very interested in everybody else. I think that she has a fear of actually looking at herself.”

Indréa added: “[Geneva] needs to understand that she’s human. … And being honest about that can really save you a lot of heartache and turmoil and the heartache and turmoil with those around you, if you just be transparent.”

In the same universe as Perry’s original series Sistas (and with crossover potential), the eight-episode BET+ series highlights and challenges themes of starting over, visibility and what it means to be strong.

Sears explained, “We have to try to fight against the whole ‘strong Black woman’ trope. We always feel like we have to be strong. And then there’s no opportunity for you to be fragile or vulnerable.”

She continued, “Not just as a beauty standard, Black women, we want to feel seen, we want to feel heard, we want to be respected, we want to be protected. And unfortunately that’s not happening enough.”

But it is the sisterhood circle, Luckett said, that keeps her character — who’s dealing with perfectionism and upholding the image of being a pastor’s wife — grounded. “I think Rasheeda is just trying to keep it together as best she can, but I think she’s also on the verge of breaking,” she explained. “She can always lean on her sisters and they know her. They’ve been knowing her 20 years-plus, and she can keep it real with them.”

While the drama shows a layered sisterhood onscreen, the ladies shared during the discussion that they also developed a bond in real life.

“We held each other down regardless of what came our way,” Indréa said. “We were going to deal with it together head-on. That was probably the most important part to me.”

Luckett explained, “I feel like we are very intentional about showing up for each other, loving each other, being real and making sure that we hold each other accountable. You’ll see that throughout the series.”

As for Perry’s take on the performances, he said: “I think the first two episodes are just the warm-up, but when this thing starts taking off, all I’ll say is, hold on. They deliver.”

Divorced Sistas will premiere on Monday on BET after the 2025 BET Awards and will be available to stream on BET+ starting Tuesday.
